Optex releases WATER it Data Management Service that brings digital transformation to water quality control

Automatic measurement and remote monitoring significantly reduce management costs

Optex Co., Ltd. (Headquarters: Otsu City, Shiga Prefecture, President & CEO: Toru Kamimura, hereinafter “Optex”) has launched the WATER it Data Management Service, a smart water quality control service. This service allows users to perform remote and real-time water quality control through connection to Optex’s water quality measurement equipment.

■ Background of the development

In 1993, at the request of Shiga Prefecture, Optex developed an automatic transparency measurement system that accurately and continuously measures the transparency of Lake Biwa. Since then, it has provided support for the management of the water environment at various locations, including rivers and factories at home and abroad. In addition to the long-term shortage and aging of the workforce, there is growing demand to reduce the frequency of periodic inspection patrols due to the impact of COVID-19 at sites where water quality control is exercised. On the other hand, systems must be able to promptly identify and respond to failures and abnormalities caused by aging equipment.

This service was developed as a digital transformation (DX) of water quality control by utilizing Optex’s sensing and IoT technologies, with the aim of significantly reducing on-site workloads. Among other features, the service supports connections to existing sensors* and offers a low cost of introduction.

■ Main features

Based on the concept “making it easy to measure, communicate, and monitor,” Optex offers total systems that allow users to understand the water environment anytime, anywhere. Remote monitoring of sites and early detection of abnormalities through alarm notification or the like make it possible to improve the reliability and simplicity of operations.

Data display

Data displays include trend graphs for monitoring the trends of measurement data, map displays suitable for managing multiple sites, and list displays that are useful for CSV output.

Alarm notification

Alerts about abnormalities are delivered by push notification via email. Users can set the conditions to suit their applications.

Maintenance notifications

The service supports on-site servicing and maintenance by notifying users via email of the timing to replace consumables, timing of maintenance, abnormalities in equipment, and low batteries.

Reporting function

Tabulation of measurement data is automated. This ensures that reporting is carried out while also simplifying it.

Linkage with meteorological information

Precipitation and temperature data at measurement locations are captured. This data can be used to make reports and configure alarm settings.

Group function

Viewing permissions are configurable, allowing multiple users to take part in management.

■ Data Management Service plans and connection to each sensor

The WATER it Data Management Service can be connected to all of Optex’s water quality sensors. Also, depending on the sensor type, it is possible to obtain data from non-Optex products.

■ Future prospects

Prior to the launch of the service, verification tests were performed to check different measurement items, such as pH, conductivity, dissolved oxygen (DO), turbidity, and water level, in various factories and municipal river management operations. Reviews include: “It made our operation easier, reducing the frequency at which we needed to visit the site”; “We were able to reduce management labor and personnel.” The service will be further developed as a platform for water quality control, such as in the aquaculture industry, for natural disasters, water supply, sewage, and wastewater, and contribute to the achievement of the SDGs by improving the world’s water environment and creating safe sites.

Optex will continue to solve all kinds of social issues through its business with sensors and help to provide safe, secure, and comfortable lives to people all over the world.

  • WATER it Data Management Service is designed for Japan market.
